The Maori version of the name (Te Whare Taonga o Te Tairawhiti) would seem to translate approximately to 'The Treasure House of Te Tairawhiti' (ie Gisborne) The Museum Includes the 'Star of Canada' maritime museum area based upon a portion of the superstructure of a ship wrecked off Gisborne earlier this century. Includes an exhibition focusing upon James Cook's landing at Turanga in 1769 (his first landing in NZ). The landing place is marked by a flagpole (by the main harbour wharves).
A s tatue of Cook overlooks the port (the statue apparently is based upon the statue of an Italian Nobleman from 'Cooks Brewery' in Auckland and was thus thought to be a staue of Cook!
